Domitek- Investing in the Future

This past spring, Domitek offered an essay contest to Worcester Public School students in grades 7 and 8. Students were asked to select one of three essay topics, and write about that topic, in an effort to earn a FREE laptop, as a gift from Domitek. In addition to writing the essay, students were required to provide a recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor.

The superintendant's office was quite receptive, and encouraged participation. As a result, we received essays from schools throughout the city. Choosing our five winners was a challenge. We have some fine young people here in Worcester, who at their young age have already developed an excellent work ethic and attitude. This contest sought to reach young people who not only exhibited a thirst to learn, but who might not otherwise be able to obtain a laptop. Reading through the essays and teacher's recommendations, Domitek staff, and local community leaders and volunteers helped to determine who could gain the most benefit from the prize.

We congratulated four out of five of our winners at a ceremony held at City Hall, on Friday, August 30th, just in time for the start of the new school year. City Counselor Sarai Rivera congratulated and encouraged the students, and volunteer Benito Vega spoke about the purpose of the contest, and how it had started last year, when Domitek owner, Libis Bueno, recognized a need among our city's young people. The ceremony concluded as Libis Bueno gave a laptop to each one to the winners.

The mission of the Domitek Essay Contest is:

"Providing Worcester Public Schools students, who face financial and/or family burdens, with a laptop that they can use for the purposes of enhancing their educational experience, so that they may in turn continue on the path of furthering their education, and following their dreams."

Please join us as we congratulate this year's winners, Yeni Ortega and Anh Nguyen Phan from Claremont Academy, Yaw Amponsah from University Park, Princilla Minkah from Sullivan Middle, and Osamah Mandawi, from Forest Grove. A sixth winner, Jenifer Barcenas, was awarded a $50 gift card to Best Buy, as a runner-up.

Mr. Bueno is hoping to continue this contest as an annual event, and would like to encourage other local business owners to participate, by donating a new laptop for next year's contest, so more driven and goal-oriented young people will have the tools they need on their road to academic success.
