Tips on securing your wireless connection

Many people today use Wi-Fi, also known as wireless networks, to connect their laptops, phones and other electronic devices to the internet. Although using a wireless network has its advantages, it can also harm you if your network is not protected. Here are a few tips to help you secure your Wi-Fi.

Use Encryption

Encryption scrambles the data you send over the internet into a code, to help prevent hackers from getting your information. Wireless routers give you the option of encrypting your data, but usually you have to turn this feature on. The directions that come with your router should explain how to turn this feature on or you can always check the company’s website.

Use a Password

Make sure that you have a password on your wireless internet connection. Remember to choose a strong password for securing your network, don’t use the one that came with your Wi-Fi router. It’s always a good idea to change default passwords.

Restrict Access

Have your network set up to only allow authorized users to access the network. You don’t want your neighbors or any hackers to have access to your network to access information on your computer or send spam mail that could be traced back to your account.

Protect your SSID

Check to see if you can change the default SSID to make it more difficult to guess. This will help avoid outsiders from easily being able to access your network.

Turn off, when not in use

If you turn the router off when you are not using it, hackers cannot access your wireless router.

These are just a few quick tips on securing your Wi-Fi connection, it is always good practice for your network and computers to maintain your antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall software.
